Another blessed, rain-free day in Siena. We’ve officially accepted defeat from the forecast gods and booked our train tickets and Airbnb in Florence, where the prediction is ten straight days of rain. If we’re going to be soggy, we might as well be soggy in a bigger city—one we know like the back of our very well-traveled hands. After all, we’ve lived there for two to three months every year for the past few years. At this point, Florence feels like that friend who doesn’t judge you for showing up damp and cranky.
With one last dry day to spare in Siena, we split up for our own versions of adventure. Tom, fueled by optimism and Lycra, cycled off into the Tuscan hills surrounding Siena, proving once again that semi-retired does not mean “less cardio.” I, on the other hand, embarked on a far more civilized mission: visiting the contrada fountains.

Let me tell you—this was a brilliant way to see the city. I was convinced I had already walked every street in Siena at least twice. But turning it into a contrada scavenger hunt led me down tiny lanes and into corners of the city I’d somehow missed entirely. Secret streets! Unexpected views! Occasional “wait… where am I?” moments!

I found 15 of the 17 fountains and logged 6.2 miles in the process. Honestly, I’d highly recommend seeking out all 17 contrada fountains at the very beginning of your trip. It’s sightseeing, exercise, and a treasure hunt all rolled into one—no bike shorts required.

All in all? A fabulous day. And not a drop of rain. ☀️
